Bridging the Gap

Red Hook Houses

On October 24, 2018, four NCOs conducted a Senior Safety Seminar in the Red Hook Senior Center. The Seminar included a presentation on safety tips and scams. NCO’s explained to seniors what various scams exist and how to avoid being a victim. NCOs also gave out crime prevention flyers before Halloween and held a second safety seminar before Christmas. Over 40 seniors were in attendance.

The Red Hook Community Justice Center, in partnership with PSA 1, held a Bridging the Gap event on October 18, 2018. The purpose of this event was to strengthen the relationship between the community and NYPD. Ice breakers and games were led by NCO’s and RHCJC staff to get to know one another. Youth and officers sat in a circle and had conversations on various topics ranging from current events to police procedures. These conversations help create an ongoing dialogue between police officers and youth. They help to both humanize police officers—to help the youth see the person behind the badge—and helped officers see the legitimate concerns youth have with law enforcement.
